Hingham Beer Works to stay open later on Weekdays

Residents who crave a late burger on a weekday at Hingham Beer Works will soon be able to enjoy their meal without being rushed out.  The Board of Selectmen agreed to extend the closing hours of the Shipyard restaurant and bar to 1 a.m. on a daily basis. 

The original closing time was midnight. Alhough company policy allows the kitchen to remain open until fifteen minutes before the scheduled closing time,  there have been occasions when diners have arrived after 11 p.m. on a weekday, ordered food and then been asked to leave just after their food has arrived.

Jim Callaghan, General Manager, believes that the extended opening hours will allow those who may be coming back from a late sports event to grab something to eat without feeling pressured.

“The plan is not to change the hours that we are open as, frankly, there is not an awful lot of business at that time, but we want to have the flexibility that if we do have guests that are in with us dining, then we don’t need to close at midnight,” Callaghan said to the Selectmen on Tuesday night.

Hingham Beer Works opened in the Shipyard in September 2010 and despite some incidences in the early months of operation, there has not been any problems since February. Police Chief Peraino had expressed concern over the extended opening hours, stressing that they took violations very seriously and wouldn’t hesitate to reconsider should these events occur again.

“It is extremely important that not one location gets a reputation as a place where you can go and be served too much alcohol,”Selectman Laura Burns said.

The Shipyard will have foot patrols on duty in the area during the summer months, wand will pay close attention to the increased activity in the area.
