Hingham Designated As Green Community: Eligible For State Grants

Hingham is now eligible for $142,232 in grants for improving energy efficiency.

HINGHAM, MA — The Baker-Polito Administration announced Thursday that Hingham was one of 30 municipalities designated by the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) as a green community.

The designation requires a commitment from cities and towns to reduce energy consumption from town buildings by 20 percent over the next five years. In return, green communities are eligible for grants to pay for projects which improve energy efficiency. Hingham is eligible for $142,232 in grants.

Hingham is now one of 240 green communities in the state. According to a press release from the DOER, 68 percent of Massachusetts municipalities have earned a green communities designation.

“The Green Communities program is an essential component of our nation-leading clean energy success and demonstrates our administration’s commitment to partnering with municipalities,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “These 30 newly designated communities are pledging to join in responsible stewardship of the environment and taxpayer resources while creating a cleaner, healthier Commonwealth for our residents and businesses.”
