Hingham Family Fun Day Returns, Hopes to Bring Community Together

The 13th annual Hingham Family Fun Day is scheduled for August 25.

The Hingham Police Department is inviting all local residents to celebrate the end of the summer with the 13th annual Family Fun Day.

The outdoor free family fun event will be held Sunday, August 25 at Cronin Field, behind the Central Fire Station.

The event will include police cars and motorcycles, fire trucks, US Coast Guard Boats, Army National Guard trucks, and a Police K-9 Demonstration.

For children there will be  pony rides, a petting zoo, a speed pitch machine, a dunk tank, face painting, and moon walks.

Last year, children played in foam which covered the field, others got to watch a State Police Helicopter land right in front of them, while others petted farm animals and rode ponies.

Hingham Police Lt. Cory Farina was one of the organizers of this 13th annual event. He said Family Fun Day follows Chief Michael Peraino’s mission statement which is “Community Committed.”

Farina said the event is designed to build community and build better relationships between the town’s people and the police department.

“In a community like Hingham, this a perfect avenue to do it,” Farina said at last year's event. “You have a small community that is tight-knit with their police department.  It just makes every aspect of policing go so much smoother if you know people and have friends in the community.”

A year ago, Hingham officer Tom Ford was popular amongst the kids as he spent the afternoon getting dipped in the Dunk Tank while officer Heather Mendes played in the field of foam and Officer James Foss introduced the children to Mercedes, the town K9 dog.

“It’s a way for us to relate to the citizens,” officer Lisa McCracken said last year. “It’s just a great, great event.”

There will also be an outdoor barbecue with hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks, along with Fun Day T-shirts.  There is a small charge for food.

The event will be held all afternoon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
