Hingham Library to Help Break the Reading World Record

On Thursday the Hingham Library will join more than 2 million voices by reading "Llama Llama Red Pajama" by Anna Dewdney and setting a world record in the process.

 The is making a push for early childhood education by participating in the Jumpstart's “Read for the Record.”

Jumpstart will try to break a world record by having over 2 million people from across the nation read “Llama Llama Red Pajama” by Anna Dewdney in the same day.  Libraries from across the country including the Hingham Public Library will take part in the event by reading the children's story. Parents can also pledge online that they will read the book to their children on Oct. 6.

"The way it works is everybody will be reading that book across the nation," said Hingham Children's Librarian Katheen McGonagle. "Everyone will try to read the same book in the same day."

On Thursday from 4:00-4:30 p.m. Hingham children and their parents will not only read stories written by Dewdney but McGonagle said they will also and create a llama arts and craft project.

The "Read for the Record" national campaign was created for adults and children to close the early education achievement gap.

Each campaign year, Americans have joined together to break the world record by reading classic stories: "The Little Engine That Could" (2006), "The Story of Ferdinand" (2007), "Corduroy" (2008), "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" (2009), and "The Snowy Day" (2010). During the 2010 campaign, Americans read with 2,057,513 children, breaking a World Record and creating the largest shared reading experience in history.
