Hingham Police Turn Medication Into Electricity

Police recently collected 160 pounds of unwanted medication that was incinerated and turned into electricity.


Hingham police have a solution for discarding old medication that also helps bring electricity to homes.

Last week, the department collected 19 boxes of unwanted medication and delivered them to the Covanta-SEMASS facility in Wareham.

Police say they collected 160 pounds of medication.

The drugs are dumped into a machine that shreds them before they fall several stories into an incinerator. The incinerator creates steam that is turned into electricity for nearby communities according to police.
