Hingham’s Tim Wakefield To Announce Retirement Tonight

The Red Sox knuckleballer will hang up his cleats after a 19-year MLB career.

Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield  will announce his retirement after a successful 19-year MLB career.

Wakefield, who lived in Hingham during the Major League Baseball season, will retire tonight at JetBlue Park in Lee County, Florida, CBS reports.

The 45 year-old knuckleballer spent 1992 and ’93 with the Pirates before spending 17 seasons with Boston from 1995-2011. This past season, Wakefield won his 200th career game on September 13 against the Toronto Blue Jays.  He now finishes his career as third on the Boston Red Sox with 186 team victories, behind both Cy Young and Roger Clemens, who have 192 each. He finishes his career with a 200-180 record, 4.41 ERA to go along with 2,156 strikeouts.

Wakefield who has pitched a starter, middle reliever, and closer with the Sox was part of the 2004 team that reversed the curse of the Bambino by winning Boston’s first World Series title in 86 years.  The veteran pitcher won a second World Series title with the Red Sox as a member of the 2007 team.

Wakefield is commonly seen around Hingham at supermarkets and the gas stations. Wakefield can also be seen in a current commercial for Hingham Jewelers He and his his live in Hingham during the season and during the off-season, they reside in Florida.
