Hingham to Celebrate Farmers Market Week

Saturday August 27 will conclude the statewide Farmers Market Week that was declared by Governor Deval Patrick.

The will celebrate the statewide Farmers Market Week with live music, raffles, and general good cheer. 

During the week of August 21, festivities will be held at both the Wednesday and Friday markets to reflect Governor Deval Patrick’s declaration of "Farmers Market Week."

In addition, the Hingham Selectman declared for the third year, a Day to be acknowledged on August 27.

“It is an opportunity to talk about and promote the importance of ventures like this, including other farmers markets,” said Hingham Farmers Market Chairman Mark Cullings. “The more we can encourage them, the greater the chance for expansion.”

Saturday will serve as the main day of celebration with two baskets raffled at the cost of $1 per ticket, or six for $5. A winner will be chosen at the end of the market day; however, one does not have to be present at the drawing to win.

Each basket will be passed among the vendors to collect their products, which can include fresh lobster, pasta, and produce, among other market favorites.

On Wednesday the market will invite visitors to join with Troubadours Steve Waymen and Paul Cappers in a sing-a-long from  noon to 1 p.m.

The is celebrating its 34th year in operation as the third-oldest market in the state of Massachusetts.

“One of the reason we are as popular as we are today is because there is more attention nationally, regionally, and locally to put better food in your body,” said Cullings. “I hope it is a permanent culture shift to make people of all ages more aware, to teach future generations, and to promote local agriculture.”

The already received great recognition earlier this month being named the in Boston Magazine. They now seeking to gain national recognition from America’s Favorite Farmers Market in a contest ending August 31.
