Homeowners Believe Lightning Caused Hingham Fire

The two homeowners were watching the Stanley Cup when they heard lightning strike their home. Shortly after they noticed their roof was on fire.

It took an aggressive interior attack from Hingham Firefighters to extinguish a two-alarm blaze in an East Street home on Monday night.

The homeowners at 378 East Street reported the fire at 8:58 p.m. after they heard lightning strike their home, according to Fire Captain William Powers.

When firefighters arrived they noticed heavy fire to the right peak of the home, Powers said. The fire burned through the roof, while water from pumper units left damage on the lower floors.

Firefighters from Hingham, Cohasset and Hull were able to contain the blaze in the attic.

The two homeowners, John and Lisa Adams were watching the Stanley Cup when the fire started and were able to escape their home safely,  Powers said in a statement.

The residents suspect that lightning ignited the fire, Powers said. The Hingham Fire Department has not determined a cause, but did say the fire worked its way from the outside to the inside.

The owners were left temporarily homeless, as the home still smells heavily of smoke.

This is the second fire on East Street this year.  A three-alarm blaze destroyed a home in the 200 block back in January that left a family homeless and killed a dog and rabbit.
