The James Library & Center for the Arts, Norwell’s historic community arts center and lending library, presents a fall season of eclectic music and literary entertainment and art gallery events serving the South Shore community at 24 West Street, Norwell.

Step on the trolley and enjoy The Historic Norwell House Tour and Shopping Boutique, which shows guests some of the oldest and most unique homes in the region. See how charming living in an antique is, visiting special properties including The Jonathan & Joseph Turner House, “The Big White Barn” on the original Clapp family estate, and The James Library & Center for the Arts, the beneficiary of this special fundraising event. Shop for early holiday gifts at the House Tour Boutique with more than 20 artisans, including jewelry, paintings by local artists, topiaries and antiques. Beginning at the Cushing Center, 673 Main Street, the tour includes trolleys to transport guests to each location for a self-guided tour. Sponsored by the Norwell Historical Commission. Proceeds benefit The James Library & Center for the Arts mission, to inspire creativity, learning and an appreciation for the arts through music, visual and literary programs in a historic and welcoming space for the community.

Weekend Classics: Boston Cello Quartet

The Boston Cello Quartet, founded by acclaimed Boston Symphony Orchestra cellists Blaise Déjardin, Adam Esbensen, Mihail Jojatu and Alexandre Lecarme, embark on the pleasantly storied tradition of the musical travelogue with a jaunt through Spain and a hop to the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking New World with an exceptional program, which includes a world premiere written for the Quartet by the Venezuela-born composer Paul Desenne. Celebrating the Season with Storyteller Davis Bates

Parents’ Choice Award winning storyteller Davis Bates presents Celebrating the Season: Songs & Stories for the Harvest & Halloween. The show includes farming stories and songs from the past and present, sea songs and chanteys, Native American stories, family tales and not-too-scary ghost stories. Enjoy sing-a-longs, a short lesson on how to play music with spoons from a kitchen drawer and an appearance by a dancing wooden dog named Bingo. Sponsored by Church Hillers of Norwell.

~ Fall Art Gallery Series ~

The James Library is home to a beautiful community art gallery featuring the works of local artists for monthly gallery openings and exhibits. Visitors are welcome to attend the openings, or view the works on display during business hours.

The South Shore Woodturners: Turned Objects of Art & Purpose

The South Shore Woodturners, a group of local craftsmen who work with native and exotic woods, create a stunning variety of turned vases, bowls and sculptures.

Southern New England Artists Community (SNAC): New Works
On view October 2 through November 4
Free opening reception on Friday, October 2, 6 to 8 pm

SNAC Members work in a wide range of mediums with a shared goal of extending the reach of their art while connecting to more artists. Member artists have exhibited in galleries from Boston to Newport. The members include painters, a photographer, a mixed-media artist, illustrators and sculptors.

Larry Guilmette and Jake Basso: Vagaries & Variants

Larry Guilmette has been making art for over 40 years, influenced early in life by Dada, Abstract Expressionism, Pop and Arte Povera. The postmodern images he creates currently are inspired by nature, history, ritual, tradition, spontaneity and daily observations. His series of pictures utilizes marks, texture and color to seek out an unforeseen solution. This exhibit of recent works is primarily monoprints with mixed media. Sculpture artist Jake Basso shares the billing.

Since 1874, The James Library has served the South Shore community as a warm gathering place. Housed in a landmark Victorian in historical Norwell Center, The James is dedicated to serving the community by providing high-quality programs, resources and materials through a concert hall, art gallery and the operation of a free lending library. As an independent, non-profit arts center we foster a mission for the creation, appreciation and enjoyment of the arts for residents of all ages on the South Shore, while preserving the historic character of our home. The James Library is located at 24 West Street, Norwell and is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 pm and on Saturday from 10 to 1 pm.
