Kid-Friendly Fun: Nona's Homemade Ice Cream and the Hingham Shipyard

Take advantage of time with your kids and get out and enjoy these hot spots. Your Patch Passport gives you options for great local spots for kid-friendly fun.

Kids can have their choice of an air conditioned ice cream shop or warm sunshine on their back at these two popular summer locations in Hingham.

Nona’s Homemade Ice Cream

For any kid with a sweet tooth, is the place to be this summer. Located in Hingham Square, Nona's offers a variety of 85 ice cream flavors, along with smoothies, pies, cakes and even its own ice cream truck!

The best part of the store happens in the back room where the ice cream is handmade. Starting with a common base that is put into the ice cream maker, individual toppings are churned by the hand of Sara DiPesa.

Nona’s uses real ingredients in its unique flavors including real Grape-Nuts cereal and Reese’s peanut butter cups that are hand-cut in the back room.

Kids cannot seem to get enough of their the Cotton Candy ice cream, while the adult favorite is often Hingham Harbor Sludge, a chocolate ice cream with chocolate swirl, caramel and crushed Oreos.

The store's newest addition is an ice cream truck that delivers regularly along the beach route of Hingham, Scituate, Cohasset and Norwell. In addition, it can be rented for neighborhood block parties, weddings, and even funerals (yes, that has happened).

A family atmosphere runs throughout the shop, from pictures on the walls to the names of ice creams flavors to their motto: “eat your dessert first!”

Owners Tom and Krissy Donahue have named four delicious ice cream flavors after each of their children: Hurricane Madilyn, Mister Christian’s Bounty, Mocha Mia and Johnny B Good.

Hingham Shipyard

The Hingham Shipyard is a perfect spot for kids to enjoy summer’s warm weather.

The wooden horse Carousel offers a great deal of fun for only $2 per person; daily from 12-8 p.m. until August 13.

Shipyard Links Mini Golf is right next door where kids can try their stroke at 18 holes. For children under 12, the cost is $4, for adults it is $6.

One four-year-old golfer from Cohasset said she didn’t even know how to golf, but loves being there anyways because “it is so much fun!”

There are also several picnic tables with umbrellas if you are interested in packing a lunch or enjoying a snack outside.
