Lincoln Maritime Center Request a New Lease

The LMC requested leases to allow the center to use the two use the Barnes and Steamboat wharves.

Last week, the requested an extension on its five-year lease at Barnes and Steamboat wharves.

The maritime center negotiated a lease back in 2006 and Maritime President Sturt English along with over 50 residents including Hingham Sailing and Rowing team members arrived at the Selectmen meeting in support of the Lincoln Maritime Center.

The leases allow the Maritime Center to use  the two wharves in order to run their sailing and rowing programs, at the cost of $1 each per year.

According to the Hingham Town Administrator Ted Alexiades , under the lease terms, the town is required to notify the Maritime Center by September of each year if town officials do not wish to continue the leases. Otherwise, they are automatically extended for an additional year.

Last week, the Selectmen were not prepared to negotiate the lease and said they would approve the extension anytime between September 1 to January 1.

Rice Road resident Doug Pilgrim was in favor of a new lease for the LMC.  Pilgrim said , the LMC had been a great facility for the Hingham High School Sailing team.

“Without the  facility, I don’t know how strong the Hingham High School program could be,” he said. In past [students] would have to hop on Red Line to Boston [to sail]. I think its something we should support.”

Tonight the selectmen are scheduled to vote to move the extension of notification date to November 30, 2011 and  the current lease term to November 30, 2012.
