New School Committee Chair Appointed on Split Vote

Andy Shafter will lead the committee after a 4-3 vote.

The Hingham School Committee now has a new chairperson, vice-chair, and secretary, all on split votes.

Monday night, the committee voted 4-3 to appoint Andy Shafter as the chair, Liza O’Reilly as the vice-chair.

In remarks prior to the vote, Falvey touted her experience as vice-chair and a committee member, adding that the has many working relationships with other officials in town and Superintendent Dorothy Galo.

“These experiences make me uniquely qualified along with the ability to get things done as a team,” she said.

Shafter called the pre-vote remarks very unorthodox since committee members usually do not give speeches when nominated for a position.

Also appointed to a new position was recently elected committee member Aylene Calnan on a 3-2-1 vote.
