New Start for Hingham 4th of July Road Race

The Hingham 4th of July Road Race begins at 7 a.m. on Independence Day.

Hingham’s largest Road Race will kick off the town's 4th of July Festivities.


The 55th annual  4.47 mile race will begin at 7 a.m. at the Middle School and will end under the giant flag on Main Street in Hingham Square on Thursday.

For a second straight year, runners' times will be tracked with disposable timing chips, but this year will also include a new start line.

The start will be divided into three sections: less than 7 minutes per mile, between 7-8 minutes per mile, and more than 8 minutes per mile.

Interested runners can register online through Active.com or by  printing and mailing the registration form

This year's registration fee is $25  through July 3 with a  $30 Registration Fee Day of Race between 5:30 am and 6:30 am.

Pets, strollers, baby joggers, skates, boards, or bikes will not be allowed in the race. Unregistered runners will also be diverted off the course.

Transportation will be provided from the lot on station street to the start.

Runners will be able to pick up there numbers and t-shirts at the Hingham Recreation Center on 210 Central Street  on Saturday, June 29 - Tuesday, July 2  from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. of Thursday, July 4 from 5:30 a.m.to 6:30 a.m. at the Hingham Middle School.

Last Year's Winners

Tom Finneran, 21 of Scituate has won the last two years.

Finneran, a Wake Forest student,  finished with an impressive time of 22:13, sprinting at a pace of 5:06 per mile last year.  In 2011, he was the youngest winner in the race’s  history, according to Tom Belyea, commissioner of the Hingham Recreation Department.

Last year,  Finneran edged out Gregory Putnam by 21 seconds.  Putnam placed second for a second straight year and hasn’t won the annual town race since 2006, according to Belyea. 

Hingham South School and Plymouth River School physical education teacher Luke Dodge finished third with a time of 22:59.  Dodge won the race in 2010 and finished sixth in 2011.

Holly Madden placed first amongst the women runners for the fifth straight year with a finish time of 26:00 minutes.

Jennifer Merlin was second with a time of 26:33 and Laura Boer placed third with a time of 26:52.
