Parenting Education Speaker: NYTimes Finance Columnist Discusses New Bestseller "The Opposite of Spoiled" at Inly School
"The Opposite of Spoiled," an instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, is a practical 21st guide to money and values.
As the current “Your Money” columnist for The New York Times and former writer for The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company and Fortune, Ron Lieber has made a living writing about personal finance. As a parent, he’s had to grapple with the same difficult questions all of us face surrounding the subject. On Tuesday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m., Lieber will discuss his new bestseller, The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who are Grounded, Generous and Smart About Money, and provide practical tips for parents of kids in preschool through college. Open to the public, the event will be held in the Meehan Family Artsbarn at Inly School, 46 Watch Hill Drive off Route 123 in Scituate. Tickets are $10 and available online at www.inlyschool.org. Published in February, 2015, “The Opposite of Spoiled,” was an instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. Along with useful talking points, Lieber covers all the basics: the best ways to handle the tooth fairy, allowance, chores, charity, saving, birthdays, holidays, cell phones, checking accounts, clothing, cars, part-time jobs and college. But he takes it a step further: “I’ve also identified a set of virtues and character traits like modesty, patience, generosity and perspective,” he says, “that all parents hope that their kids will carry with them out into the world.”
“The book is as much about values as it is about money,” says Julie Kelly-Detwiler, Assistant Head of School and Curriculum Director at Inly. “It is designed to spark conversations within families, schools and communities about gratitude and perspective and to address the challenges of raising grounded children in the 21st century. The topic ties into our practical life skills curriculum as a Montessori school, but the message is universal.”

Open to the public, this speaker series explores a range of parent education topics and philosophies. It is designed to provide opportunities for parents, educators and the community at large to practice life-long learning, whether about Montessori and other educational philosophies and programs, or about parenting in general.
