Police Warn of Phone Scams in Hingham

The scammer claimed to be from the "U.S. Treasurer's Office" and threatened several residents with legal action, police reported.

Several residents have been victims of phone scams in the last several days, the Hingham Police Department announced on Wednesday.

Residents have reported they received messages on their home phones related to an IRS Scam.

The caller claimed to be from “US Treasurer’s Office” and threatened to take “legal action” if the residents did not return his calls or pay back the money they owed, according to the police.

Police said the caller spoke in a thick foreign accent.

The scammer also threatened one resident with an “arrest warrant,” the Hingham Police posted on its Facebook page.

Hingham police advise residents to delete any phone messages or hang up any calls that seem suspicious.

The IRS or any Federal, state or local government agencies will not call or email residents to threaten legal action, police said.
