Focused on the imminent coming of Christ, the liturgical season of Advent is a unique time in the church year. The Scriptures ask: When the Lord comes, will he find faith on the earth? As Christians, however, we must go deeper by asking the question: What kind of faith?

This seminar will examine three radically different paradigms of faith represented by three legacies of the Old Testament, and then relate these paradigms to the New Testament and to authentic Christian faith. Informed by these paradigms, the seminar will then examine the figures in scripture and the themes of Christian spirituality that rise to greater prominence in the liturgical celebration of Advent. The seminar will conclude with a few remarks about the liturgical celebration of Christmas.
