Quorum Questioned, Town Meeting Will Go Third Night

Town Meeting will resume next Monday.

Around 11 p.m.  last night the quorum was questioned at Town Meeting, and the night ended because the number of people decreased below 300 voters.

Before the night ended, voters agreed by a slim margin to keep the quorum of 300 voters in tact.  After a standing vote, 147 people were in favor of keeping the existing quorum of 300 voters while 145 Hingham residents voted to reduce the quorum to 200 residents.

This rule was first established in 1939 and Karen Johnson of the Advisory Committee said it is the best way of having the community and neighbors engage with each other.

On Tuesday night, the majority of voters also agreed to make the treasurer/collector position from elected to appointed. This will be effective a year from now.
