Route 3A Rotary: Hingham’s Most Dangerous Intersection

The Hingham Traffic Committee said the number of accidents are down in Hingham, but the Route 3A rotary is the most dangerous.

Despite the recent car crashes last week, Hingham police say the number of accidents for the year is down from last year.

According to an article on 959watd.com, Hingham Police Sgt. Steven Dearth said the nicer weather this winter has resulted in fewer accidents.   Dearth also said out of 30 intersections in Hingham, the rotary that connects Summer Street to Route 3A turned had the most accidents in 2011 with 10 crashes, WATD reported.

Dearth along with the  Hingham Traffic Committee believe most of the crashes result from the rotary having one lane where drivers expect two when entering, WATD reported.

At Wednesday’s Traffic Committee, the committee’s  recommendations to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is to design a rotary with two lanes.

Last week, Hingham saw three serious accidents.  On Thursday, a S causing a three car accident.  On Saturday, a Scituate man pulled out of the parking area on Route 53 and , causing it to rollover. On Sunday, a Hanover man allegedly drove drunk causing damage to it.
