Selectmen Critical of Verizon's Performance
Work done by Verizon sub-contractors had left unused conduits and caused damage to the driveway of a Hingham resident.
Verizon’s request to install conduits for cabling on Hingham roads were the subject of debate by the Selectmen on Tuesday night.
Verizon is looking to install cabling on Manatee Road, Volusia Road and New Bridge Street, however it was revealed that previous installations of fiber optic cable had not been carried out to local residents' satisfaction.
According to the town, work done by sub-contractors on Kress Farm Road, Ringbolt Road and Saw Mill Pond Road had left unused conduits and in one case had caused damage to the driveway of a Hingham resident. There is a long-standing agreement between the Department of Public Works and Verizon that any work undertaken leaves the area in the same state that it was before and this appears to have not been the case.

“It shows a lack of respect for this board and a lack of respect for the town,” Chairman of the Board of Selectmen John Riley said of the work done by Verizon.
Riley did agree with the recommendation that any further requests for Grants of Location by Verizon be held over until the errors made have been rectified.

There were no such problems for National Grid who had Grants of Location approved to install and maintain gas service mains in Smith Road, Smith Way, Downer Avenue, Jarvis Avenue and Melville Walk. There has been a history of gas leaks in these roads and work to correct this situation is expected to be completed by fall.
