Signs of Optimism: Hingham’s Unemployment Rate Drops

Hingham's unemployment rate dips to 4.4 percent while the National average drops to its lowest since 2009.

As the year comes to a close, Hingham saw its unemployment rate decline from January to November from 5.9 percent to 4.4 percent, a sign that hiring is on the rise and the economy may be improving.

In January, Hingham had a total of 682 unemployed residents; That number has dropped to 510 in November, according to the State Department of Laborforce Development.

In November, Hingham had a total of 11,172 employed workers, the highest total for any month this year.

So far the unemployment rate in 2011 looks a lot better than the past two years. This year, Hingham’s unemployment rate in averaged out at 5.2 percent which is a lot better than the 6.2 percent  of residents unemployed in 2010 and the 6.1 percent  who were without a job in 2009.

Still, the unemployment numbers show we are still in a recession. Hingham’s unemployment rate remains significantly higher than in years past. It hovered between 2 percent and 4.4 percent from 2000 to 2008.

Yet, the unemployment rate in Hingham is well over the National average.  According to an article posted on Boston.com, America's unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent in November, the lowest since March 2009, two months after President Barack Obama took office.

The Globe aricle reports the country added 120,000 jobs in November. Private employers added 140,000 jobs, while governments cut 20,000.
