South Shore Conservatory Presents Sail Away Ladies

An acoustic trio which features fiddling sensation Eden MacAdam-Somer. will perform on July 23.

has invited the public to join them on Saturday, July 23,  at 7 p.m. for Sail Away Ladies,  groundbreaking contemporary acoustic trio which features fiddling sensation Eden MacAdam-Somer.  This is the one of eight Evenings Under the Stars (EUS) open air summer concerts that take place in the Jane Carr Amphitheater at One Conservatory Drive in Hingham.

Sail Away Ladies is an  artistic ensemble devoted to combining the old-time sensibility of folk music with a high caliber of musicianship. With arrangements, soaring harmonies, infectious grooves and intuitive improvisations, this virtuosic ensemble transforms traditional folk music, world music, and contemporary repertoire, combining an old-time sensibility with a truly adventurous spirit.

The South Shore Conservatory considers Fiddler Eden MacAdam-Somer as one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians performing today. Her music transcends genre, through soaring violin and fiddling, sweet vocals, and percussive dance. She has been a featured soloist with symphony and chamber orchestras, jazz and swing bands, and Eastern European and American folk ensembles. She has been an artist at the Aspen and Beijing International Music Festivals, and, with her contemporary folk duo, Notorious, has traveled across the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, India, Iceland, the UK, and Afghanistan.

SS Conservatory said cellist Ariel Friedman is one of few musicians to be challenging the boundaries of cello playing.   A winner of ASTA's 2009 Alternative Styles Award, she is in current exploration of American roots traditions, 1920's and 30's jazz, and in composing songs and tunes influenced by her diverse musical tastes. She performs, tours, and records with Scottish National Fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel, is a member of the Boston-based traditional band, Long Time Courting, and plays with New England's highly acclaimed fiddle band Childsplay.

Singer and fiddler Mia Friedman is an energetic and eclectic performer. She started playing Suzuki violin at an early age, and made the switch to more traditional fiddle styles when she was 12, leaning towards Scottish, Appalachian, and French Canadian tunes. Spending summers at fiddle camps around the states, she fell in love with these old traditions and learned from some of the masters: Alasdair Fraser, Mark O'Connor, and Natalie MacMaster. Mia is writing songs and playing music that blend these traditions with jazz and classical influences. Winner of the New England Regional Scottish Fiddle Championship in 2006, she now plays with her sister, Ariel, in many venues and dance halls around the Northeast. Mia also sings with the neo-soul group, The Love Experiment.
