South Shore Conservatory's Evenings Under the Stars Festival Orchestra Presents The Best of the Classics
With Conductor Nicholas Palmer and soloists cellist Adele Carter and bassoonist Janet Underhill
South Shore Conservatory’s Evenings Under the Stars concert series kicks off on Saturday, July 11, 7 pm as the Evenings Under the Stars Festival Orchestra and Conductor Nicholas Palmer present The Best of the Classics: Mozart and More!. Generously sponsored by the The Palmer Family, this is the first of four EUS Saturday evening open air summer concerts in the Jane Carr Amphitheater at One Conservatory Drive, Hingham.
Maestro Palmer leads the professional orchestra in a concert of beloved classics that include Mozart’s Serenata Notturna, and Impressario Overture, two excerpts from William Walton’s Henry V, Franz Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major which features SSC faculty cellist Adele Carter, and Concerto for bassoon, strings and continuo “La Notte” Antonio Vivaldi, which features SSC faculty bassoonist Janet Underhill.
A Hingham native, Nicholas Palmer is in his 19th season as conductor of the Evenings Under the Stars Orchestra. He has been widely recognized for his compelling performances and emotional connection to audiences, and is regarded as one of today’s most talented conductors. Palmer is Music Director of the renowned Owensboro Symphony Orchestra (OSO) in Kentucky, and the Lafayette Symphony in Indiana, and the North Charleston POPS! His strong commitment to education and building new audiences, as well as his innovative programming, has garnered him high praise.

A favorite guest conductor in Europe, Mexico and Latin America, Palmer has also led the Europa Philharmonie, Czech Radio Orchestra, San Remo Symphony, West Bohemia Symphony, Sophia Symphony, Milano Classico Orchestra, Lausanne Symphony, the OSSLA and Monterrey Symphony in Mexico, National Orchestra of Bolivia and the Medellin Symphony in Columbia.
Cellist Adele Carter spent her early career touring with multiple orchestras and chamber groups to Aspen, Pacific, National Repertory and Brevard Music Festivals in both North America and Asia. While pursuing graduate studies, Adele launched a rich performance career based in LA, where she made TV appearances including the Grammys, American Music Awards, and The Tonight Show, and with featured artists such as the Backstreet Boys, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Lopez, Stevie Wonder and NSync. Upon moving Northeast with her husband, Adele served as a visiting lecturer at Bridgewater State College from 2007-2008. Since moving to the South Shore, Adele has been delighted with her role as educator/musician at SSC, performing regularly with the World’s End Trio. Adele graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music and holds a Doctoral degree from the University of Maryland and a Masters degree from the University of Southern California. She has been on the faculty of South Shore Conservatory since 2010.

Hailing from British Columbia, Canada, Janet Underhill, has been a bassoonist, teacher, conductor and administrator in the Boston area for over 25 years. She is director of Preparatory Winds for Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras and Director of Senior Wind Ensemble for Community Music Center of Boston. A nationally recognized teacher, she was the recipient of the Kay Login Chamber Music America Award for excellence in chamber music teaching in 2001. Janet is a founding member of Arcadian Winds, a woodwind quintet specializing in contemporary music that has premiered more than 50 works. She has performed solo at the International Double Reed Conference in Minneapolis, The Fromm Series at Harvard University, the Gaudeamus Competition in Rotterdam, Holland, The Women’s Avant Festival in Chicago, The Warebrook Contemporary Music Festival in Vermont, The Outoftowners series in New York City, CrossSounds in Alaska and Soundwaves in St. Petersburg, Russia. Janet has been on faculty at South Shore Conservatory since 1987.
Evenings Under the Stars is one of two series in the Conservatory’s diverse Summer Spotlight outdoor summer entertainment. Summer Spotlight also includes fun Wacky Wednesdays family concerts which starts its season on July 1 with Parents’ Choice award winner Little Groove. All concerts take place in the Jane Carr Amphitheater at One Conservatory Drive in Hingham.
The Best of the Classics is sponsored by the Palmer Family. Dorothy Palmer and her sons, Nicholas and Robert, dedicate this concert to the memory of their dear friends Dr. Peter Barrett and Kim Barrett. Maestro Nicholas Palmer is sponsored by Phyllis Godwin/Granite Electric Supply Company.
Other Evenings Under the Stars concerts include The Follen Angels on July 18, Alliance Brass Quintet on July 25 and The Mikado on August 1.
Tickets purchased in advance are $35 for pavilion seating, $40 on performance day, and $20 for lawn seating, $25 on performance day for Saturday evening concerts. Tickets for the Wednesday morning family concerts are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Season subscriptions to the four Saturday evening concerts are available for $195 for pavilion and $160 for lawn seating and include the pre-concert receptions.
