The Hingham Department of Public Works purchased a new trackless tractor and street sweeper earlier this week.
The tractor cost the town $111,695 and the street sweeper cost $151,689. The Board of Selectmen approved the purchases on Tuesday night.
DPW superintendent Randy Sylvester said a new tractor was needed after the old one kept having problems and needed to be fixed with parts that were expensive and could only be found outside of the United States. The new street sweeper, a 2011 Elgin Pelican, will replace the town’s 12-year-old sweeper which was purchased in 1999 and also had mechanic problems. Sylvester said the town’s old sweeper is very costly to repair and not cost effective to keep. The new sweeper will include duel gutter brooms, air conditioning, an auto-lube system, and air-ride seat, and AM/FM radio.
