Did you know Boston Light was the first light house in the United States? Built in 1917 it is designated as a National Historic Landmark? Join us for a 3-mile walk from Pemberton Point to Fort Revere. We start at Pemberton Point, also known as Windmill Point where you can walk up to Hull's first new windmill, Hull Wind 1. (Hull has an even larger windmill Hull Wind 2 close to Hingham.)
See the first Kennedy Compound before the family moved to Hyannis, an original speakeasy still in existence in the basement of a private home. Walk Fort Revere, the strategic site of underground bunkers and five active canons protecting Boston Harbor.
This is also where on-land pirates stored their booty after causing ships to crash en route to Boston from England.
From Pemberton Point you can see Peddock's Island where the movie Shutter Island was filmed. It starred Boston actor, Mark Wahlburg.
From the top of Fort Revere on Telegraph Hill, you can see all of Boston Harbor.
Bring a lunch for the picnic tables or experience Jo's Nautical Bar after the walk. (Jo's Nautical Bar is in a house that was built above the entrance to underwater tunnels that lead to other island forts. The entrance is inside the bar. True or not? Ask Phil and see photos.)
Carpool to Pemberton Pier from the first parking lot on Nantasket Beach. We'll leave promptly at 10:30 and meet up at Pemberton at 11am. To get there, set your GPS for 42a State Park Road to enter the parking lot. This is the best entrance to the lot. It's across the street from Nantasket Hotel. Parking is free after Sept 1.
If you prefer to drive to Pemberton Pier, you can park at the Hull High School and meet at the picnic table in front of Joe's Nautical Bar, located at 125 Main St, Hull. Meet there at 11am.
It's about 6 miles from Nantasket Beach to Pemberton Pier, so leave extra time to get there.
South Shore Walkabouts hosts free walks in parks around the south shore. We will be joining the Irish Culture Club and South Shore Hike Bike and Social. You can join us and RSVP on bigtent.com/groups/sswalkers
