PRIZE WINNERS, ACCEPTED ARTISTS & WORKS
1st “UFO 3” Kevin Haran, Oviedo FL
No computer graphics program can replace the strength and elegance of great draftsmanship. With minimal means - a limited palette, straight lines, and traditional materials - this is more a portrait of form itself than a depiction of an object. With stains and a corner tear it evocatively references the past, when new machines and sci-fi predictions of the future captured the public’s imagination.

2nd “Mary” Patricia Schappler, Bedford NH
This charming portrait of a young woman beautifully and sensitively captures her simultaneous innocence and budding sexuality. Her body curls in tandem with the swirling patterns of the fabric that surrounds her; her hunched shoulders tell one story while her exposed thigh and direct gaze communicate a time of life we’ve all experienced.
3rd “Art Deco Gone Wild” Becky Haletky, Pembroke MA
Before multiplexes there were true movie palaces, elaborately decorated destinations whose design was as dramatic as the silver screen. This portrait of one such architectural treasure smartly continues the style and color of its deco design into the representation of the snack bar and employee; it celebrates the well-deserved conservation of the structure.
AWARDS OF MERIT
“Portrait” Timothy Wilson, Somerville MA
Today most people interact with photography digitally – taken with phones, viewed on screens. But for generations photographs and paper were partners. In this self-referential work, the physical potential of the medium is called out with elegance.
“Fenway Fly By” Franklin Remmi, Milton MA
Maps inspire many contemporary artists attracted to both their inherent abstraction and familiarity. Here, a New England icon is seen anew much the way the blimps that soar above Fenway Park must see it on game days.
“Deco Walk Square” Selena Nawrocki, Douglas GA
Stainless steel, glass, and mirrors: the ubiquitous materials of recent architecture as seen in corporate complexes, shopping centers, airports, and hospitals worldwide. In this piece, punctuated by exuberant color, the repetition of forms highlights this ubiquity.
“On a Roll” Abby Lammers, East Falmouth MA
Abstraction and representation coexist in this colorful composition. From a distance, the cylinders and rectangles could be dynamically arranged simple shapes, but on closer inspection they reveal themselves to be the tabletop remnants of both creative work and a great cocktail party.
