5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 11

1.The Friends of the Hopkinton Library Book Sale is today from 10 to 4 BUT if you become a Friend of the Library for a very manageable fee of $10, or $5 for seniors and students, or $20 max for your whole family - and you can do it right while you're there - you get into the sale at 9, just like going to the front of the line at a swanky nightclub. The Book Sale is also Sunday from 11 to 2.

2. Hopkinton Cub Scout Pack 26 also has a geo-caching event and family picnic starting at 10 and going until 1 at Hopkinton State Park. I have a friend who geocaches and he has a blast! The particulars differ but all geocaching involves a kind of high-tech hide-and-seek with objects instead of people. Boys are invited to bring their parents to meet Pack 26 families, play games and activities and enjoy lunch provided by Pack 26. Come learn about Cub Scouting. No obligation to join. Siblings welcome. 3. Also at 10 a.m., the Greg Montalbano Memorial Trap Shoot at Woodville Rod and Gun. Greg, who died in 2009 at age 31, grew up in Westborough, pitched in Little League, at St. John's and Northeastern, where he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He continued to play baseball, was drafted by the Red Sox, named their 2001 Minor League Pitcher of the Year and finished his career with the Worcester Tornadoes. He then put his industrial engineering degree to work while also coaching and becoming a spokesperson for the Red Sox and Jimmy Fund. A great man gone too soon.

4. Where else are you going to be at 4 p.m. besides the Barn Jam? Local bands, and we mean lots of them and lots of good ones, are holding a fundraiser at the Cultural Arts Alliance field at 98 Hayden Rowe St. in front of the high school to help pay for the Hopkinton High School Drama Ensemble's wee trip to Scotland in August for the Fringe Festival.  $5 for students and $10 for adults. 5. And now for something completely different as a Britsh comedy troupe once said. Just before Band Jam, and just afterward, this afternoon at 2 and tonight at 7:30, Enter Stage Left presents the USO Big Band Bash at the Hopkinton Senior Center. Tickets are $17 general admission, $13 for students, seniors and Stage Door members. Bash and Jam! It's music to my ears.
