5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 12

Rainy Sunday may change a lot of plans but Firefighters Memorial ceremonies will go on.

1.The Hopkinton Fire Department will hold ceremonies this morning honoring deceased firefighters for Firefighters' Memorial Sunday, which is the second Sunday in June every year. Hopkinton Firefighters will meet at the Fire Station, 73 Main St., at 9:45 and march to the  Firefighters Memorial at Mount Auburn Cemetery on Mayhew Street.  The names of deceased firefighters will be read. Firefighters will then return to Fire Headquarters for concluding ceremonies.

2. Day 2 of the Friends of the Hopkinton Library Book Sale is today (Sunday) from 11 to 2. Rain or shine at the library, 13 Main St..

3. The Sharon Timlin 5K Race for ALS, Saturday, June 18, at Hopkinton High School (5K starts at 8:30) needs volunteers for race day to help the race be Green Certified according to the FitPlanet Pledge of Sustainability. Green monitors are needed to  make sure items are recycled, composted or trashed. Bike valets are needed to check-in and monitors bikes - runners are encouraged to bike to the event. And volunteers are  needed for the shoe-collection drive. Contact Jayashree Dattar at 508.625.1028 or  jaydattar@gmail.com for shifts from 6:45 to 9 a.m.; 8:30 to 10 a.m.; or  9 to 11 a.m. Volunteers for partial shifts are welcome!

4. By the way, if you haven't registered for the Timlin 5K, you can do it right here (Registration closes Wednesday at midnight.) Money from the event goes for reasearch to find a cure for ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's Disease. Sharon Timlin, the mother of former Red Sox pitcher Mike Timlin, died of ALS, leading to the creation of this terrific event, now in its eighth year. Besides the 5K, there are kids races, raffles, bands, games and a big party! Good fun for a good cause. Don't miss it!

5. Monday, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hopkinton Public Library, Hopkinton Girl Scouts will hold a registration for girls entering kindergarten. This is an active and excellent Girl Scout chapter so get your girls in on the fun.
