5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 19

1. Firefighters Memorial Sunday was moved to this morning because of last week's weather. The Hopkinton Fire Department will hold ceremonies starting at the station at 9:45 to honor deceased firefighters. Firefighters will march from the station to the Firefighters Memorial at Mount Auburn Cemetery on Mayhew Street. The names of deceased firefighters will be read. Firefighters will then conclude ceremonies with a return to Fire Headquarters, 73 Main St.

2. Coffee Connection by the Network of Enterprising Women is Monday morning, June 20, 8 o'clock at the Hopkinton Public Library. Please use the back ramp door of the library. Visit the Network of Enterprising Women website for more information. 

3. Tuesday, June 21, is the last day of school (Monday for afternoon kindergarten). It is also the day for Elementary Report Card distribution, EARLY DISMISSAL, the Elmwood Meeting of the Eagles and the Hopkins Whole School Meeting.

4. Are you good with people? Do you have the ability to mutli-task? Hopkinton is looking for a new Assistant Town Clerk. Besides helping and reporting to the Town Clerk and the Board of Election Registrars, the assistant fills in when the clerk is unavailable, signing bonds, certifiying documents, and performing other duties. The job is full time and pays from about $750 to $1,000 per week depending on experience. Interested? A complete list of qualifications and instructions how to apply are here. The job became open following the resignation of former assistant Clerk Deborah Holbrook, who disagreed with the town's handling of a tie vote for library trustee in the May 16 election.

5. Patricia Murray Canali, the principal of , retires this month. Doctors recommended the Milford resident retire to continue healing from injuries she received in a 2010 fall from the school stage. Canali has been on the job since then, but in an emotional announcement early this year, said she had decided to retire. Canali was briefly a teacher and guidance counselor in Hopkinton, which is in the Keefe regional school district. She has been an educator in area schools for 38 years. Her three-year tenure at Keefe is widely admired for her innovative and spirited leadership.
