5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 21

1. This Saturday, June 25, and the last Saturday of each month, Hopkinton accepts disposal of white metals such as stoves, washers and water heaters at the Highway Department, 83 Wood St. No air conditioners, refrigerators or freezers because of environmental regulations. No computer monitors, TVs, electronics or microwaves. They can be brought to the recycling center on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For items not accepted by the town of Hopkinton, contact EL Harvey and Sons at 1.800.836.3000 or Millis Auto Parts 1.800.962.4100.

2. The Capital Improvements Committee meets tonight at 6:30 in Town Hall. Since many of its members retired as of annual Town Meeting it will be interesting to see what the committee looks like. The committee's job is to make recommendations on Hopkinton's capital spending for five-, ten-year, and longer periods. Two members are appointed by  the Town Moderator (currently Bruce Karlin) and three by selectmen for staggered five-year terms. No town officials or town employees can be on the committee.

3. The Sustainable Green Committee also meets at Town Hall tonight at 7:30. Besides being Hopkinton's environmental champions, HopGreen has directed considerable state dollars (more than $137,000 in 2010) to Hopkinton by meeting state environmental standards and instituting green procedures.
