5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 25

1. See the Class of 2012 at Hopkinton High School dressed in beautiful dresses and handsome formal wear at the Hopkinton High School Athletic Center, 4 p.m., Friday in the pre-prom Grand March. Of course it's the wearers, not the clothes, who make the ma specrchial.

2. Today's governmental meetings: Council on Aging, 1 p.m. at the Senior Center. The council promotes the well-being and enhances the quality of life through services and activities for older adults in Hopkinton. Board of Appeals, 7 p.m. in Room 215 at Town Hall. The BoA is where Hopkinton residents and property owners seek exceptions to town zoning laws. Cable Advisory Committee at 7 in Room 211. The committee is appointed by selectmen and makes general recommendations regarding the town's cable-television operations to them. Tonight's meeting is the start of determining whether the license for Comcast, which expires on 11.15.13, should be renewed. The cable committee needs Hopkinton residents' input. The cable license is renewed once every 10 years so now is your chance! The 300th Anniversary Celebration Commmittee at 8 upstairs at the Hopkinton Fire Station. The celebration committee makes plans for events around Hopkinton's 300th birthday on Dec. 13 in 2015.

3. Never been in a road race? Try the Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K to benefit ALS research (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's Disease, a degenerative, fatal neuromuscalar disease. The race is Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. at Hopkinton High School. Registration open until June 14. $25 with lots of fun events for adults and kids. Download registration here.

4. All Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are welcome this Friday, May 27, 3 to 4:30 p.m., at Evergreen Cemetery to replace old flags on veterans graves with new ones for Memorial Day. This event is coordinated by the American Legion, who will provide the new flags as well as bags for the old ones, which will be appropriately retired. A great, hands-on activity for even the youngest Scouts.  Scouts should wear their uniforms.

5. The CAA's Sunset Jazz Series starts Saturday, June 4, 7 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Alliance amphitheater, 98 Hayden Rowe St., with the Shimon Ben-Shir group. Shimon Ben-Shir is a bassist whose bands blend jazz, Middle Eastern and South American influences. Ben-Shir has released three albums Shades, 2007's Ways, and the  latest CD  released in March, Encounters (Amazon sampler). Ben-Shir will be joined at the June 4 CAA show by guitarist Hagai Perets, and percussionist Moez Dawad.
