Hopkinton Center for the Arts

Ekphrasis is the use of vivid language to describe or respond to a work of art. Through ekphrasis, we can connect more deeply with the world around us and with ourselves. Our one-day ekphrastic workshop is a great opportunity to write something new and enjoy the spring season!
In this workshop, you will:
• Receive a tour from curator Jamaal Bonnette of the Creating Through It • Spend dedicated time enjoying the art, selecting a piece to respond to, and writing about it • Share your work with the class in a round of supportive feedback • Decide if you’d like your work to become a part of the exhibit for the remainder of its run

Whether you’re a dedicated writer continuing your practice, trying to meet fellow local writers, or just looking for a nice way to enjoy the spring season, our ekphrastic workshop is a great opportunity to create art in a relaxing, supportive environment!

As the saying goes in fine art, “color gets the credit, but value does the work.” Join us for an inspiring artist talk and guided gallery tour exploring how a firm grasp of core techniques unlocks complete creative freedom. Ayana Mack will walk visitors through her vibrant, multi-layered work that evokes transformation and possibility. Learn how she fearlessly pairs exuberant, high-saturation color with mixed-media elements—including integrated poetic text—while keeping her compositions structurally grounded and deeply expressive.
Ayana's work is part of the exhibition "Creating Through It" curated by the HCA’s 2026 Curator Fellow, Jamaal Bonnette. The exhibition focuses on using creativity to express those emotions that often overwhelm us. Ayana Mack is a Boston-based multidisciplinary artist, muralist, and creative storyteller whose work uses public art as a catalyst for healing, joy, and community connection. Her artwork creates space for reflection, affirmation, and collective care.

Designed for adults with a foundation in drawing, this intensive 4-hour workshop takes you through the process of creating a two-page comic book spread from start to finish.
Begin with a character warm-up and an introduction to 1-, 2-, and 3-point perspective. Then, using an open-ended story prompt, explore storyboarding, pacing, panel composition, perspective, value, tone, and storytelling techniques as you bring your character to life.
Work with traditional comic-making tools, including non-photo blue pencils, dip-ink pens, Microns, and Bristol board. By completing a short “slice of life” story arc, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to tackle your own comics or graphic novel ideas.
Materials: All supplies are provided by HCA, or you’re welcome to bring your own. A suggested supply list is available below.
