Cormier's Self Defense Academy Celebrates 30 Years
Holliston dojo is celebrating 30 years of teaching men, women, teens and children the martial arts of karate and jujitsu this fall
Cormier’s Self Defense Academy, at 53 Jeffrey Ave., is owned Jim Cormier, who started the school in 1987. The academy specializes in karate, jujitsu, and self-defense training, as well as nurturing its students' character and self-confidence. The school teaches three disciplines: Okinawan Goju ryu Karate, Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu, and Yoshitsune Jujitsu. Cormier continues to train and study along with his students and recently received his Purple Belt (Shihan - Master Belt) promotion in Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu. He is also a Master Instructor in Okinawan Goju ryu Karate and Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu, and a 4th Degree Black Belt in Yoshitsune Jujitsu.
For Cormier, 69, making a difference in his students’ lives and watching them develop their martial arts skills is what’s kept he and the dojo going over the long haul.
“When I decided to go full-time, I knew I was going to do this for the rest of my life. I look back 30 years later and see the many accomplishments that have happened and I’m as happy as I could be,” he said.

To commemorate the triple decade milestone, state Rep. Carolyn Dykema presented Cormier with a proclamation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives marking the dojo's 30 years in business in Holliston.
"Thirty years in operation is a special milestone for any small business, but particularly nice when it's one that's part of the fabric of the community, increasing the health and self-confidence of youth and students of every age," Dykema said in her congratulatory message. “Congratulations to you Jim and to all of your dojo families, past and present!"
