Cormier's Self Defense Academy Karate Students Win at New England Tournament
Holliston Teen and Kids Karate Students Medal in Forms, Weapons, and Sparring
Eleven karate students from Cormier’s Self Defense Academy in Holliston competed at the World Martial Arts Federation Semi-Annual Tournament on Sunday, November 16, 2014. The World Martial Arts Federation Fall Tournament, which was held at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center, is a family-friendly event open to martial arts students of all ages, styles, and abilities.
Over 500 martial arts students from the New England area competed at the Tournament. Cormier’s Self Defense Academy’s teen and kids karate students demonstrated their skills in Forms, Weapons, and Sparring. Five of Cormier’s students placed in the top four in their categories:
- Jamie Ogilvie: 2nd Place Black 15-17 Forms ; 3rd Place Black 15-17 Weapons; 4th Place Black 15-17 Sparring
- Andrew Palmer: 2nd Place Black 15-17 Sparring and Black 15-17 Weapons; 3rd Place Black 15-17 Forms
- Theo Businger: 4th Place Black 10/11 Forms and Black 10/11 Sparring
- Sara Buckley: 4th Place Advanced 8/9 Sparring
- Danny Liberty: 4th Place Intermediate 10/11 Sparring
Winning competitor medals were Adriana Bulmer in Beginner Under 5 Forms, Ben Bulmer in Advanced 8/9 Forms and Sparring, Owen Bulmer in Intermediate 10/11 Forms and Sparring, and Nathan Hung in Beginner 6/7 Forms. Earning competitor medals in Intermediate 8/9 Forms and Sparring were Johann Mari and Okain Newlands.

The top four competitors in each event were awarded trophies. All competing children who did not win trophies received a special competitor’s medal, recognizing their courage and best effort for competing.
“Our students worked very hard and had an outstanding day. I am extremely proud of their enthusiasm, perseverance, and sportsmanship.” said Jim Cormier, owner and Master Instructor at Cormier’s Self Defense Academy and World Martial Arts Hall of Fame Member. “Thank you to the parents and everyone who came out to support the team and the tournament. It means a lot and I really appreciate it.”
