Hopkinton Firefighters Remember Those Who Served

Hopkinton Firefighters honored those who served before them Sunday in ceremonies at the station and at the Firefighters Memorial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

An engine and a police patrol car with flashing lights accompanied about a dozen firefighters, including Fire Chief Ken Clark, as they marched from the station to the memorial site on Mayhew Street, which has hydrants, a bell, Hopkinton Firefighters Helmet No. 1, and a monument.

A crowd of about 30 awaited them there and attended the ceremonies and watched as Firefighter Josh Sables placed a wreath on the memorial.

Deputy Chief Steve Slamin led firefighters and spectators in The Lord's Prayer and Chief Clark read the names of Hopkinton's deceased firefighters, including his own father who served 37 years as a call firefighter and died last month.

"There's a lot of service to the town of Hopkinton here," the chief said before reading the names.

After the names were read, Firefighter Tom McIntyre sounded the "all-in" bell at the memorial, whcih Cheif Clark explained signified that all firefighters were back at the station, safe and sound.

The Fire Department provided coffee and pastry for guests at the station afterward, and recognized three firefighters for their long years of service to Hopkinton.

Robert Clark was honored for 25 years as a full-time firefighter.

Dickie Bartlett, who also has some great photos of the memorial on the HCAM-TV site, has been a call firefighter for 20 years. And Louie Monjat was recognized as a call firefighter for an amazing 30 years.
