Hopkinton High to Compete in WGBH's Quiz Show 'Super Sunday' Qualifying Event

Hopkinton joins 120 high schools across the state to vie for 16 spots in the televised tournament.

On Sunday, Nov. 16, 120 high schools from across Massachusetts, including Hopkinton High School, compete for a chance to participate on season six of High School Quiz Show, the Emmy Award- and Parents’ Choice Award-winning program produced and broadcast by WGBH and hosted by Billy Costa. During “Super Sunday,” each academic team of four students will take an identical oral quiz of 100 questions based on the Massachusetts curriculum at WGBH Studios in Brighton. Of the 120 teams registered to compete on “Super Sunday” this year, 36 schools, including 21 private and parochial high schools, are participating for the first time. This is the first year the tournament has been open to private and parochial high schools. Twenty-five schools participate for the fifth time.

“We are excited to welcome so many new schools to the competition, and to once again offer High School Quiz Show as a platform for Massachusetts high school students to showcase their smarts,” said Executive Producer Hillary Wells. “We look forward to seeing such an impressive number of our state’s academic stars competing on Super Sunday.”

The top 16 teams advance to compete in the televised, single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament that will determine a state champion. The season will culminate with a Governor’s Cup Challenge, when WGBH’s High School Quiz Show state champion team meets New Hampshire Public Television’s Granite State Challenge winner for the third annual interstate quiz show face-off. This season’s Governor’s Cup Challenge will be hosted by WGBH.

High School Quiz Show begins taping at WGBH in January in front of a studio audience. It will premiere Saturday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. on WGBH 2.
