Hopkinton Police Warn About Police Call Scam

Scammers have called residents, posing as Hopkinton officers asking for money donations.

HOPKINTON, MA — Hopkinton police are warning residents to be careful when answering the phone in case a scammer is on the other line. Residents complained to police that they received calls from people posing as Hopkinton police officers, asking for money.

The department took to Facebook to warn residents, adding that when the scammers call, the actual department name and phone number will pop up on the caller ID. Police said the person on the other line will claim he is an officer and that the department is seeking donations in the form of Money Order.

The department warned not to give away any personal information, "The Hopkinton Police will never be calling you to ask for a donation or to provide us with money in any way. Any calls you receive that are similar in nature to this and make you feel uncertain, it is likely a scam and hang up."
