Hopkinton's Timlin Race Needs Volunteers & YOU for Fun

The 8th Annual Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race to Cure ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) is sold out and has so far raised more than $42,000 to be used in the fight against ALS.

But don’t let that stop you from attending this great event at Hopkinton High School, Saturday, June 18 (tomorrow). There are all sorts of family activities, food, a live band, raffles and silent-auction items.  Children’s races are open for registration until race time.

Because of the large number of people expected to attend this event and because the Timlin Race is going green, organizers urge racers, spectators and volunteers to avoid traffic hassles and bike.

Once you arrive, bike valets will watch your wheels and will remain at the site until noon.

Here is the day’s schedule:

7 a.m. Event opens. You can pick up your race packet, bike valets will be on hand and registration for kids races will be open until 9:15.

8:30 5K begins

9:45 Mini-Marathons begin

10 Kids 1-Mile begins

11 a.m. Purchase of raffle tickets and bidding on silent-auction items closes. Among the prizes: Patriots footballs signed by Tom Brady, Vince Willfork and Matt Light. You do not need to be present to win a raffle.

Say hello to honored guests, former Major League pitcher Mike Timlin and his family. Mike's mom Sharon, for whom the race is named, died of ALS.

The Dunk Tank opens at 8:45.

Come to the field behind Hopkinton Middle School and dunk your favorite teacher.

For those of you attending the event or passing by the area Saturday please note that traffic will be heavier than usual. Hayden Rowe Street (Rte. 85) from Grove Street to Chestnut Street will be closed for about 30 minutes beginning at 8:25 a.m. Police will be on hand to redirect traffic through these areas.

Parking at the site will be very limited. Allow extra time. Park on side streets if possible. Car pool if possible.

Bring your used shoes to recycle and send to Africa.

ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a fatal, degenerative, neuromuscular disease that in stages shuts down different parts of people's physical abilities, eventually including their ability to breathe, while leaving their minds intact.

It is an extremely difficult disease for those who have it and their families. Your contribution to fight this killer is most welcome!
