This Week's Hopkinton Roadwork Explained

Once school is out Tuesday, the Hopkinton Department of Public Works will start its schedule of summer road closures and delays while it improves the roads in town.

Whether the roads will be crack-sealed, reclaimed (dug up and rebuilt) or milled and re-surfaced, these streets will either be closed or travel on them severely restricted and delayed. Plan ahead!

Cracksealing is the black material you see sprayed in the cracks in the road.

Mill and overlay is a process in which a machine grinds off a predetermined thickness of existing pavement and then the same thickness is reapplied with new asphalt.

Double chip seal is a process that involves applying hot liquid emulsion and stone to the existing road, which is then rolled.

Reclaiming is a process in which a machine grinds up the entire road all the way down to the gravel then the proper amount of new asphalt is applied.

Here is the schedule starting Wednesday, June 22.

Wednesday, Old Elm Way which starts at the Upton town line and dead ends will be reclaimed.

Wednesday and Thursday, West Main St. from School St. to the Upton town line will be milled two inches and overlay; Pleasant St. from Nebraska St. to Grove St. will be reclaimed.

Thursday, Gassett Rd. from Priscilla Rd. to W. Main will be milled one-and-a-half inches and get a 2-inch overlay; Maple St. Ext. from Pleasant St. to the dead end and Maple St. from Pleasant St. to Grove St. will be reclaimed.

Thursday and Friday, Pleasant St. from Grove St. to Hayden Rowe will be milled for 2 inches and overlaid.

Friday, Ash St. from E Main to Park will be milled one-and-quarter inches and get a 2-inch overlay; Leonard St. from Grove St. to 485 ft. south of Grove will be cracksealed; Park St. and Holt St. from Ash to Hayden Rowe St.­­ will be cracksealed.
