The Pain Management Service offers individualized, multidisciplinary care for people with acute, chronic or cancer-related pain.

Antje Barreveld, MD, has been appointed as the new Medical Director of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Pain Management Service at 159 Wells Avenue, Newton. Dr. Barreveld has been caring for patients as a member of the NWH Pain Service and as an anesthesiologist for surgical and obstetrics patients for four and a half years.
Working with her multidisciplinary team, Dr. Barreveld will assume a leadership role within the larger Newton-Wellesley community in crafting a programmatic, comprehensive approach to pain in all of its forms, including efforts to optimally manage patients suffering from substance use disorders, support primary care providers, and provide infrastructure for our medical and surgical inpatients.
“We are grateful to Dr. Paul Satwicz, who is relinquishing his leadership role after 24 years,” said Jake Joffe, MD, Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “Dr. Satwicz originated the Pain Service and served as its Director since 1993. He is widely recognized for his tireless devotion to our patients. He will continue to care for patients at Wells Avenue as he has done since the inception of the program, expertly and with great compassion.”

The Pain Management Service at Newton-Wellesley Hospital offers individualized, multidisciplinary care for people with acute, chronic or cancer-related pain. Our team provides a comprehensive approach to diagnosing, treating and relieving pain through medical management, interventional management, physical therapy, and alternative and behavioral methods. The team works together to develop treatment plans tailored to each individual patient’s needs with the primary goal of reducing or eliminating pain and enabling patients to achieve the highest possible level of function and independence.
Patients are referred to the Pain Management Service by their physician or other healthcare provider for an initial consultation. This appointment allows the team to determine the most appropriate treatment for each patient’s pain management. A treatment plan is developed and reviewed with the patient and their family.
