Jamaica Pond Reopens Following Harmful Algae Bloom Outbreak

The pond had been closed to the public since July 20.

The public health advisory at Jamaica Pond has been lifted, according to the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC). The pond had been closed to the public since July 20 after water testing confirmed a harmful outbreak of blue-green algae blooms.

Residents in the area can now safely return to using the pond for fishing, boating and all other recreational activities, except swimming. A ban on swimming will remain in effect until further notice.

Cyanobacteria levels in the water had tested out as high as 240,000 cells/mL. Any readings above 70,000 cells/mL is considered harmful to humans and animals and in some cases, exposure can prove fatal.
