JP Resident to Direct Homemade Fusion: A Musical - Opening June 10-12 in JP

JP Resident Meghan Edge discusses the musical she's directing, Homemade Fusion, opening next week at UFORGE.

JAMAICA PLAIN -

The Opposite of People (TOP) presents the Boston Premiere of Homemade Fusion opening June 10-12 at UFORGE Gallery in Jamaica Plain and touring to the StoveFactory Gallery in Charlestown June 16-18.

From the imaginations of Michael Kooman (music) and Christopher Dimond (lyrics), comes a series of musical snapshots that tell distinct stories - being true to oneself, misinterpreting signals, how we connect with others. At once dangerously cynical, desperately romantic, and alarmingly humorous - it is a tale of love, loss, and candy bars.

A production conceived to adapt to the venue and audience - TOP is partnering with two local art galleries to bring an intimate and interactive evening of theater. Audiences are invited to join in the fun early or stay late, mingle with the cast, and enjoy an open bar.

Homemade Fusion features local performers from the Boston area and is directed by JP resident, Meghan Edge.

For Edge, the show has personal significance.

"I was introduced to Homemade Fusion near the end of my undergrad at Pitt by a very dear friend," says Edge, " We had seen their original presentation at CMU’s Cabaret and remembered loving the number, 'Can’t I Just Be'. While my friends were drawn in by classic American musicals with heavy song and dance, something about the humanity I heard in every song just made me feel incredibly represented."

As a cycle musical without a direct, linear plotline, Homemade Fusion isn't like other musicals.

"There are fantastical musicals. There are lovely, literary musicals. And there are some steamy musicals. Homemade Fusion is none of the above, yet it feels completely close to you," explains Edge, "It’s everything you need without asking for it. It’s not ordinary, it’s beautiful, because daily life is beautiful, even the parts that seem ordinary. As a society, we’re so deeply attracted to chasing nostalgia and Michael & Chris make you experience all the feelings without forcing them on you."

Edge is no stranger to theatre, often seen on stage in a blonde wig playing the smarter-than-she-looks floozy, but her favorite role dug much deeper.

"I loved playing Agnes in Agnes of God this past January. The experience itself was overwhelming, but her character is written so of the charts that it was one of my most enjoyable challenges as an actor to make her story relatable," recalls Edge.

Outside the theatre, Edge is an executive assistant for the CEO of an investment bank. When she isn't playing the roles of Andy Sachs and Joan Harris, she can be found loving life near the water, be it laying out on the beach or kicking back on the boat. Her nights in include catching up on previous seasons of Game of Thrones and ordering takeout.

The Opposite of People is a newly established theater company that is dedicated to bringing accessible, unconventional theater and little known shows to the Boston-area community.
