8th Biennial State of Clay

The Lexington Arts & Crafts Society hosts new
work by 77 Massachusetts clay artists in a juried show. 

The 8th Biennial State of Clay celebrates
traditional and contemporary vessels, wall pieces ceramic sculptures, and
decorative arts. The range of ceramic expression highlights a variety of
building techniques and firing methods.

This is the
only juried ceramic show that targets clay artists with roots in the
Commonwealth. The public has an opportunity to appreciate the breadth of
creativity from artists within their own state, to view their thoughts and ideas
in clay, and experience the expansive world of the ceramics medium.

In
conjunction with awards chosen by the juror, the public is invited to
participate  in awarding the
special “People’s Choice”  award by
voting for a favorite piece.  All
works are for sale and must stay on display during the 4-week exhibit period.

Quoting from juror, Linda Arbuckle: “I
looked for resolution in the works selected that spoke to the viewer. There are
many languages. Some artists make technical excellence sit up and sing, while
others use the energy of spontaneous gesture to dance into a viewer’s
consciousness. Every rule in art can be broken, if done the right way, and that
stepping over the line becomes a part of the message.”

Linda Arbuckle, Professor at the University of Florida
School of Art and Art History, has received both a National Endowment for the
Arts and Florida’s Individual Artists’ Fellowships.  Her work is in the collections of The World Ceramics
Exposition Korea International Collection, Inchon, Korea; Archie Bray
Foundation, MT; Fredrick R. Weisman Art Museum, MN; Museum of Decorative Arts,
Little Rock, AR; Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit, MI; Racine Art Museum, WI;
Margaret Harlow Collection, Bemidji, MN.  

She will be traveling to Massachusetts to attend the Artists
Reception on May 18, and present a juror’s talk.  All are invited. She will also lead a majolica workshop at
the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society on Saturday, May 17. 

Organized by the members of the Ceramics Guild, the gallery
sitters are experienced ceramists who look forward to welcoming the public and
answering questions.
