About Town: Emery Park

Tables? Games? Picnics?

Lexington Center is a great place. Yesterday’s lunch at Nourish was a great example, and I wrote about the experience.

Board of Selectman Chair and Patch Columnist Hank Manz made a great suggestion.

“An idea has just flashed by,” he wrote in the comments sections. “I happen to like and Emery Park, but there is one thing missing. Tables. Tables at which to play games. Tables to work on. And tables at which to eat a quiet meal. Eating supper at , , or is enjoyable, partly because you did not have to cook the meal, but also because you meet an astounding number of people who, like you, came down to the Center on a warm summer evening. It would be nice to be able to buy a sandwich and a drink and then hit the tables in Emery Park near the Depot.”

Well, why not?

The inner park is used for concerts and fairs, so maybe just around the edges – or in one section so there is still a wide open space for those concerts, fairs and festivals.

We don’t want people picnicking or playing Frisbie on the , so why not open Emery Park to those options.

The kids already see the benefits of Emery Park and are constantly there – day and night. Those benches in the corner are always filled with teens. Some sit on the bench, while others opt for the grass or the brick way in front of the benches.

Eric Carlson, from the Lexington 300th Anniversary Committee (of which I am a member), already floated the idea of an Emery Park clock past the and not one of them gasped or dropped a jaw.

So, what about one or two tables at Emery Park? Maybe they could be situated near the benches.

I’d picnic or buy a sandwich and relax there. In fact, I even have visions of people playing checkers or chess there.

It’s a park, why not let adults, families, kids and teens enjoy picnics or games there – on tables?

Did your jaw just drop or did you gasp?
