Arraignment Set for Craig Conkey, the Convicted Killer Charged in Decades Old Dempsey Murder

The Middlesex DA's office today announced the Superior Court arraignment in the case of Commonwealth vs. Craig Conkey, who is accused of first-degree murder in the previously unsolved 1992 killing of Lexington resident Kathleen Dempsey.

According to an announcement from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Conkey, who was indicted Dec. 21 for one count of first-degree murder, will be in court at 9 a.m. Jan. 23.

Authorities allege that Conkey, who is currently incarcerated for the killing of another Lexington woman, .

“This was a horrific unspeakable act of violence against a 31-year-old woman who was beloved and had her whole life in front of her," Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said last month at press conference announcing the indictment. "We do hope that [Conkey's] indictment brings some measure of justice to the three family members who are here with us today."

The Dec. 21 came after recent forensic testing and developments in investigative techniques, along with statements made by Conkey himself, Leone said at the time. The 45-year-old Conkey is currently serving a life sentence at MCI-Cedar Junction on charges of second degree murder and armed burglary in connection with the 1994 murder of Mary Lou Sale, 49, of Lexington.

During the time of the murders, authorities believe Conkey targeted random homes to burglarize and that the two women did not know each other or the alleged killer.
