Cantilena sings "In a Woman's Voice" - Sun May 1 - 4 pm
Cantilena sings "In a Woman's Voice" – a Choral Concert – Sunday May 1st 2016 – 4:00pm – Arlington Center, MA
Music Director Jennifer Kane has chosen a variety of songs to celebrate the sounds and colors created by women’s voices, wonderfully rendered by Arlington’s classical female chorus, Cantilena. The May 1st program features “What is Pink?” a song cycle in which American composer Ned Rorem plays with six poems musically, to evoke a wide range of moods. “In a Woman’s Voice” spans musical vocabularies from Pergolesi’s fashionable mid-18th century Galant and Baroque style “Stabat Mater”; the Romantic chorale “Lift Thine Eyes” from Mendelssohn’s popular oratorio Elijah; and Thompson’s antiphonal “Pueri Hebaeorum” for double chorus; to Moses Hogan’s arrangement of the African-American spiritual “Music Down in My Soul”; and Felicia Sandler’s choral arrangement of the Ghanaian playground song “Sansa Kroma.” Other favorites include Bourland’s heartfelt setting of Alarcón’s “I want to stop being an endless night”; Persichetti’s playful treatment of E.E. Cummings’ “In Just-spring”; Busto’s sublime chant “Salve Regina”; Loomer’s arrangement of MacGillivray’s lilting “Away from the Roll of the Sea”; and Eleanor Daley’s soothing contemporary memorial “The Angels Will Guide You Home.”
