Cantilena revives some of the finest Central European classical works of the 19th and early 20th centuries written for alto and soprano voices. The heart of Europe has, for centuries, been a locus for song-making. Guest Conductor Michael Barrett brings us composers from this region, known to have experimented with blending of mainstream classical, folk, and religious musical traditions. Cantilena explores this Czech, Hungarian, Austrian, German fusion that gives a Bohemian flavor to selected works of Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bartók, Kodály, and Dvořák. Rated as one of Boston’s Best Choirs in 2013 by CBS, Cantilena draws its remarkable soloists from the talent within this lovely sounding group.
