Many Humanist chaplaincies, organizations, and meetups today are focused on building communities for the nonreligious--spaces where people can come to feel mutually supported and inspired, and can engage in meaningful work together. The country’s first university-funded Humanist chaplaincy, at Tufts University, works a bit differently: it’s focused on offering existential and spiritual caregiving, and working with the other on-campus chaplains to make sure the needs of the student community are met whether they’re a part of organized religion or not. Join the current Humanist in Residence at Tufts to explore why they’ve adopted this model for chaplaincy and what it means for Humanist organizing in the future!
Walker Bristol is Tufts University’s newly established Humanist in Residence. He serves the chaplaincy needs of nonreligious, atheist, agnostic, Humanist, or otherwise spiritually nontraditional students at Tufts. This includes anything from one-on-one conversations about students’ spiritual and metaphysical convictions and college lives to organizing chaplaincy programming that welcomes and supports students of all religious backgrounds.

“People who don’t identify with traditional religion still have their own journeys and stories to tell, and it’s my passion to find new and progressive ways to explore those stories. Through this new opportunity at Tufts, I’m excited to be able to share and live out my values of compassionate Humanism, alongside friends new and old.”
