Cary Memorial Library Presents "Hollywood and the Culture of Eating Disorders"

How do movie star bodies and celebrity culture influence the way we  feel about our own size and shape?

Using an in-depth analysis of  contemporary films,  Dr. Emily Fox-Kales, will explore the entertainment industry's powerful and often insidious influence on both women and men, and will help us to decode the powerful messages that films and  television convey about beauty, sexual desire, fame and fortune. Dr Fox-Kales will illustrate her talk with images from such movies as Mean Girls, Shallow Hal, Kill Bill and the Devil Wears Prada.
 
Dr. Fox Kales is a clinical psychologist who has treated individuals with eating disorders and weight problems for over thirty years. In 1975, she founded the Feeding Ourselves program, and is currently its executive director.

Her articles on dieting and binge eating has been published in many professional journals, as well as in the New York Times, and  such magazines as Psychology Today, Prevention, Glamour, and Shape.  Her new book, Body Shots: Hollywood and the Culture of Eating Disorders, was published in April, 2011.

In addition to her  position as as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine at Harvard University,  Dr. Fox Kales is also on the faculty of Northeastern University where she teaches film, psychology and gender studies. She is a frequent speaker on body image and eating disorders and has appeared on numerous television and radio shows

Copies of Dr. Fox-Kales book will be available for sale and signing, following her talk. This is sure to be a thoughtful and provocative evening.  The program will be held in the Library’s Large Meeting Room, and will begin at 7:00 p.m.   Seating is on a first come, first serve basis.
