Register now to learn about The History of Cambridge & Harvard Square on Wednesday, May 6th with Paul Hogman!
Join us for an exciting night as we learn about the history of the 17th, 18th, & 19th centuries of Cambridge. In the 17th century, Cambridge was known as Newtowne and reached all the way out to Billerica (Shawsheen). During this class, we will look at the Harvard Square area, starting with the settlement of Newtowne and will view pictures of the back streets of Cambridge to see where the old Cambridge jail, warehouses, ferry, and old waterline were located. We will move along through John Hick’s House (Revolutionary War), Deputy Governor Thomas Dudley’s stone, the First Meeting House, and George Washington’s first Headquarters. Throughout the evening, we will discuss Harvard Yard, John Harvard’s statue, the original water pump, Harvard Hall, Henry Dunster, The Old Burial Grounds, and a monument dedicated to the men of Cambridge who gave their lives on April 19, 1775. Our final stop is to see Christ Church, and learn some of its intriguing history. Come and hear about little-known parts of Harvard Square!
