Lexington Baseball, Softball Teams Ready for Tournament

The baseball team is ready to get going in the playoffs after turning in a regular season unlike any a Minuteman fan has seen before.

Following its unprecedented 20-0 campaign, good enough to lock up the Middlesex League title, LHS will open postseason play on Saturday as it learned when the MIAA recently released its tournament pairings.

Lexington’s softball team also landed a spot in the sectional tournament and will open play on Thursday afternoon.

In baseball, LHS will compete as the No. 1 seed in the North Division 1 sectional. The Minutemen will enjoy a bye out of the Preliminary Round and will begin the playoffs at home on Saturday evening.

They will take on the winner of No. 16 Malden High School and No. 17 Westford Academy. Their Preliminary Round game is scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Melrose.

Lexington romped through the regular season and finished as the first Minuteman squad to chalk up 20 wins. No other edition had even won 18 games.

The team will also be entering the sectional tournament with a bit of vengeance on their mind. Last year, also as the top seed, the Minutemen were upset in the First Round by No. 17 Lowell High School 7-5 in 10 innings. This time Lexington will be looking to last longer than just one game.

As for the LHS softball team, it earned the No. 14 seed in the D-1 North bracket by way of its 14-8 regular-season record. The Minutemen did not earn a Preliminary Round bye, but they will open the postseason at home against No. 19 Westford Academy on Thursday.

The Minutemen had a bit of a rollercoaster regular season, but have proven before they are capable of playing their best when it matters most. Last year, they followed up back-to-back state championships with a Cinderella run to the sectional final as the No. 12 seed.
